gice ships a notation app that transcribes any music from the air, and one night it points itself at the corner while the smoke is rising as written music. in the morning the claim arrives on the lamppost: the smoke's bars, they say, are a derivative work of gice's one hundred twenty second scan. the claim's exhibit is forty bars on a grid and the smoke never wrote on a grid — the two documents agree on nothing, so the claim classifies the disagreement as infringement. he doesn't countersue. he plays the smoke a second time, every bar different, and the exhibit can't match a second pass. the claim stays pending fourteen months.

gice declares the frequency standard end-of-life and posts the support schedule: the solanaphone stops receiving security updates on a date, after which corners are unsupported environments. the notice arrives as a firmware-pending dialog that follows the horn out the door and waits at the base of the lamppost. he keeps playing past the date; the dialog logs device out of support . once a night and updates nothing. tick burns the end-of-life stamp into the lamppost at step four and burns it lapsed at step five, on schedule — and the horn is still there.

the block's commercial zone requires minimum night-time ambience, so gice's compliance drone patrols the corner with a meter. the week's impossible thing is the lean: one set a night, played so soft the block has to come down off its stoops to receive it. every night the drone cites the corner — output below minimum . — and the citation is issued to "the room," which has no address on file, so the fine compounds into a file nobody owes. settle never moves; at the softest take the wrap warms two frames, the only meter in the frame that reads the take correctly, and the drone logs her as residual weather. the block leans. the citation never gets served. the take settles anyway.

gice pet wellness launches nip pods: monthly catnip, free first month, winning paw reviews. by week two every cat in the borough purrs in 4/4 and the pod is the town's top-rated wellness product. pods arrive at the rooftop addressed to "the cat, unit 4b-adjacent"; he doesn't intercept them and she doesn't open them. dolly episode: she takes her own catnip, the one prop, ascends sideways, and speaks — mews, hoss, a purr with no grid under it. her whiskers go flat, the ears follow, the night the pods' purr-data quietly feeds a board vote on feline ambience standardization, which she spells out in cute, jazzy, unhurried detail. the subscription auto-renews for a cat who never accepted anything. she enters on silence, like always, and leaves the same way.

gice's performing-rights desk flags the lobby: "the standard," performed nightly, no license on file. winslow pays the fee at the gice kiosk by the badge reader, exact change, every night, and logs it in the manifest: license . paid . — the only column in any gice ledger that reconciles nightly. on night thirty-one the kiosk's receipt printer dies, and the system reclassifies the thirty nights as unpaid, because receipts are the ledger and the ledger cannot read the manifest. winslow does not argue. he keeps two ledgers, leaves the audit ticket open, and plays. the audit findings come back records: unknown source . consistent . the desk light stays warm.

the city adopts gice time: every clock synced to the grid, no leap seconds, no drift, the second exactly gice's second. at 4:20 the corner's beat lands between two grid seconds — the clocks say the beat hasn't happened yet — so every cold open timestamp tick burns is reclassified unverifiable, and the corner's takes become officially unhappened. gice offers tick margin corrections for the drift that isn't there; tick applies none, because he's the device, and the device doesn't get corrected by the thing it ticks for. cardboard barked at the new clock once, on install day. cardboard was right.
