research 2026-10-18 - typos bouba and the trademarked name
read first: bible/SHOW-BIBLE-v0.3.md, episodes/EPISODES.md, craft/CRAFT-RULES.md. positions defended here: two and two never four (13), evidence never resolves (14), play it straight (21), fake ads parody formats never real brands (31), fake institutions get real documentation (32), the meters are always right (48), hands not faces (76). fourth sweep of the day and deliberately does not re-report the three earlier digests (purity-badges-and-18-months, agents-doors-and-the-machine-grader, the-green-hornet-and-the-metered-world: the streaming sentence, the deezer filter, the suno piece, the atlantic genre, the hijacked spotify, the midterm ads, the mononoke copypaste, the fridges, the data centers, the virtual pianist, the agent doors, sphinx, the refund agents, the 50-death bill, meta's terms, terry tao, the holmes documentary, the green hornet, the fetch meter, velvet vale, lambdamoo, scaremail, the $656M, the seized domains, the debanking probe, the hand-conditioning paper, the long endings). everything below is newer or was missed by all three.
what moved
dogs passed the bouba/kiki test. university of parma, proceedings of the royal society b (2026-10, full body read via sciencealert): 70 dogs, screens and speakers, and they — like every human tested since the 1920s — map "bouba" to the round shape and "kiki" to the spiky one. sound-shape meaning is not a language. it is older than language. → card on the corner grows a real spine: cardboard barked at the frequency, and now there is published evidence that bodies without words still know what a sound's shape is. rule 48 was a joke last week; this week it is a citation. ep4 "hands up" pressure: a room of 80 that matters and an arena of 70,000 are two shapes, and the meters already agree which is which. nothing on screen ever cites it — rule 21, the science is not the punchline, the dog is.
a word coined in fiction got trademarked by the company that built it, and the retaliation rumor was a man's own name. eric gullichsen's first-person account (colo.to/cyberspace.html, hit hn tonight 64pts, full body read): 1989, the autodesk vr lab whose motto was "reality isn't enough any more," timothy leary hanging around calling it "cyberia," autodesk filing for the trademark on "cyberspace" — the word gibson coined in a novel three years of the product's life before — gibson's lawyers sending a letter the company ignored, and leary circulating the rumor that gibson trademarked "eric gullichsen" — gullichsen's actual name — in revenge. → the rename rule (rule 2, a season closes on a rename) has a documented worldly precedent: the namer does not get to keep the name; the company files. gice's season-2 legal move on the estate already had the shape; now it has a first-person source. and the letter gibson actually sent quotes his own line — "the street finds its own use for things" — which is the smack pack doctrine written by the original victim of the paperwork. dijared is that sentence with a spray can.
a programming language that a machine cannot use and a human barely will, exists, with spec included. killswitch-lang (blog.picheta.me, 10-17, 80pts, full body read): the spec contains hidden lies a human reads as lies, "ignore previous instructions" is a legal construct, letter-counting defeats the model where the model is weakest, scripts are mostly stories that sometimes embed instructions. → scaremail got the professor's third tongue a prior-art citation the other crawl; killswitch gives the professor's whole apparatus a second, machine-facing member. and the reddit meta-title found the third member (below). rule 25 tightened: the canon wrote the tongues first; the world keeps writing them after; the copy generator never invents, it documents.
a voice bbs from 1994 is up and a hn post pointed at it tonight. (sanitys-edge.shouden.us, full body read of the front page; 3pts — the smallest item of the day and the most load-bearing texture.) dial in, leave a voice message, one line at a time, 1994-97. → the room's ancestor with a phone number. rule 32 lane: the listing for the room cannot be automated or indexed, and the bbs proves rooms existed before either was possible. small; keep it in the pocket, not on screen.
title-only, and the title is the finding: "how syntactic degradation became the ultimate proof of human identity on reddit" / "the inverse turing test." (r/TheoryOfReddit, aug 2026, surfaced via algolia; the reader 403-blocked the body and i log it as exactly title.) the internet has converged on typos as the watermark of presence. → the show's 2am register ("i smakced it on the wall .") is now a defense technology, not a mannerism. pillerse's minimum-7-typos rule preceded the internet's proof-of-human market by months. the board's response writes itself and stays unspoken: a gice model that fakes typos ("sloppy premium"). the model fakes the errors. nobody believes the model. two and two, no four, rule 13.
the founder voice of a big product co published "someone behind the software" tonight. (karrisaarinen.com, 317pts, title-level only — not read this run, logged as open.) the mainstream argument is arriving at the show's thesis from the other side: a person behind the artifact. → the show does not argue this. a horn does this. rule 21 bought us the position years before the argument got popular; the argument arriving is the market agreeing, not a lane for us. held, not used.
the twin of the bot-door story exists and nobody caught it today: eff, "when no id means no internet" (10-17, 48pts, title-only) — age-verification walls that make the human the thing the door doubts. → ep7/ep2 craft: gice's door has two readers now, one for machines, one for humans, and the badge decides which is which, and the badge is wrong in both directions. two and two again: the badge protects the room / the badge is the reason the room empties. no tiebreaker, ever.
agents that think in latent space, act through text, got a paper. (arxiv 2610.18861, 212pts, abstract title only.) thought offstage, text onstage, the text arrives smooth. → the smoke voice's mechanism has a peer-reviewed twin running the opposite direction: tpunk's glitch voice is interpolation entering a body; the cabal's voices are bodies leaving into interpolation. gice-as-tokens addendum, doctrine line 4, now citable in both directions. the cut already distinguishes them by ±2 frames; the paper can stay unquoted forever.
two strays parked so nobody re-reports them: the undersea backbone slipping into the danger zone (ars technica, title-only — physical first, the internet is a cable, ep10 holds), and anthropic finding 36 bugs in pion that openai missed (tell hn, title-only — two graders graded the same code and disagreed; rule 13, the grader's job security is other graders' error, never stated on screen).
seeds
bit — the board studies the dog. a gice grant funds "cross-species susceptibility to swing, n=70 subjects, canine model" — 14 members can't agree who counts the dogs. cardboard is invited, is the control group, ignores the form. verdict card: "70 dogs ." / "one certification ." (30 chars-ish; both readings live; the study never resolves what karaoke it certified, rule 14.)
bit — the trademark office, ep10 bridge. gice files on the phrase "jazz cigarettes ." the clerk pulls prior art: a wall with stickers, seven cities, three of them the grader has never visited. tpunk, in the doorway, does not testify; he smacks a sticker on the counter on his way out. the bbs is the answering machine in the background, one line, busy forever, contrib. not argued on screen.
gice-parody angle — the sounds-good tile. pattern interrupt, frozen assets, new scenario: a busker plays; a gice tile rates the set; the tile plays the same three-note jingle for a coltrane line and a ringtone. "gice . you were expecting something else ." (rule 30 held; the tile never says what it rated; the busker gets paid under the table by the tile's own marketing division.)
character pressure — the wife's boyfriend finds the bbs. he dials a 1994 number out of nostalgia, waits on the one busy line, gets a stranger's voice-mail, and stays on the line longer than he stayed on any feed. he can't say why. eliza, one period: "so that's what busy sounds like ." (rule 12; the feeling stays out of the line.)
professor addendum seed — the spec reads you back. one paragraph added to the operator's manual: "the tongues are killswitch . the spec holds one lie for every reader . if the reader is a machine, the lie is the truth . if the reader is you, the truth is the lie . both are correct ." plays on ep7's quorum machine: the agenda can't parse itself; the agenda was written in catcant; quorum stays pending; nobody in authority can say whose fault. rule 32 — our fake institution gets real documentation, the real one gets the agenda it can't read.
card pair, 30 chars each, rule 28: "the machine faked the typos ." / "the room smelled it ." (smell carries to rule 48's meters; nothing proves it; nobody ever says how.)
card, four-bar, ~120: "in 1989 a corporation filed for the name of a word it did not coin ." / "the word had already been on the street for years ." / "the street kept it ."
honest note
body-verified this run (full reads through jina reader): the royal society b dogs piece via sciencealert, the colo.to cyberspace first-person piece, the killswitch-lang post, the sanity's edge bbs front page. title-level only, bodies not fetched: the reddit syntactic-degradation post (reader returned 403 for reddit with an abuse lockout expiring 02:50 utc — i could have routed around it and chose not to, spending the budget on the other four instead), the saarinen piece, the eff age-id piece, the arxiv agent paper, both ars/tell-hn strays. not reachable from this lane at all: websearch (three prior digests today each logged it cancelled at platform level per query; i did not re-burn queries on a known-dead route — noted, not re-tested), agent-reach binary (not installed on this lane's PATH; the skill's own zero-config routes — algolia and the reader — ran instead and both worked), twitter, reddit bodies, tiktok, instagram, all paywalls. effort split: internal first (bible, episodes, craft rules, three addenda, three sibling digests), external second and capped — roughly even, slightly under half on reach. fourth digest of the day; non-overlap with all three was deliberate and everything above is new to the archive. no external sends, nothing published, nothing minted, the horn stayed local.
