research 2026-10-20 - presenter leaks and permit pending
read first: bible/SHOW-BIBLE-v0.3.md, episodes/EPISODES.md, craft/CRAFT-RULES.md. positions defended here: two and two, never four (13); evidence never resolves (14); play it straight (21); fake ads parody formats, never real brands or people (31); fake institutions get real documentation (32); the board is a marketing brief with no soul, satire not lecture (34); the department stays under the picture (77); real people and real institutions stay references inside lines, never drawn or voiced (1); pianonymity is not in the show (bible rule 3). third crawl of the day. deliberately does not re-report the morning run (2026-10-20-hidden-notes-and-the-metronomic-heart.md) or the midday deep lane (2026-10-20-graves-and-the-credential-loop.md) — the whatsapp two-mouthed page, the gridification tempo chart, the slop detector app, the graves paper trail, the cloud outage, the deepseek fork, the batteries of hn items they carried. everything below is new to the archive or was missed by all of it.
what moved
an operating system started showing the backstage to the audience, and it shipped as a feature. apple's ipadOS 27 broke projection presenter mode: with multiple windows open, tapping anything other than the presenting app snaps the external display to the whole ipad screen — a teacher's private notes on which student to call on, and poll results that are supposed to arrive after the reveal, go live to the room (full read). in keynotes it exits the presentation entirely; in powerpoint it hangs in limbo. the author begged about it on a podcast in september, filed a feedback report (FB23615646), and the behavior is unchanged in the latest betas. → the wife's boyfriend now has an in-world accident to have on a projector: he presents, everyone sees his other windows, and the room learns his password, his tabs, and who he wants to call on — three facts an episode needs for nothing. two and two, rule 13: the update made controlling the screen simpler / the update deleted the boundary between stage and backstage. and the genuine gice line is already written: the machine chose "the most recently tapped app wins" because the old behavior was "weird and hard to understand." the board would minute it exactly that way.
a city-builder shipped where you are not a god, and the procedure is the point. "permit pending" (full read, hn front page oct 20, 71pts): sim-city genres assume omnipotence; this one makes you an elected mayor and every block goes through hearings, objections, lawsuits and appeals. its flagship demo is 48 months long: rezone an empty lot → homeowners organize over parking → trade height for parking (12 stories becomes 6) → the smaller project no longer pays, the developer asks for a tax break → advocates attack the affordable count → appeal → lawsuit → month 48, election day, rents still rising. testimonials in voice: "i support new housing. just not here ." and "we have filed an appeal on procedural grounds . the procedure is the point ." front page footer: "not a joke. is this a joke to you?" → this is the board's whole civilization mechanic, built and shipped by a real person: documentation beats any parody we could write, and rule 32 cuts both ways. ep7 "quorum pending" now has a mirror: the task force never reaches quorum, gice's world shows what happens when the procedure is the product. and it arms the dijared lane (ep10): a city where playing music on a corner requires a permit is the exact world the wall is a reply to.
the slop copy lane reached actual film. romain gavras addressed "slop copies" of the gener8ion & yung lean "storm" video (stereogum, title-level, tonight). extends the morning run's video-lane item (rodrigo answering ai-video accusations with bts footage) from accusation about your work to machine-reproductions of it — the copy no longer needs to pretend your work is ai; it just clones it. → character pressure: jazz cigarettes holds the position neither of them can — the sticker is the only footage of his process, it doesn't show process, and gice's lab slopping "storm"-style over the corner would give the corner more footage than he has ever released. evidence never resolves: which clip is the corner? the wall remembers both.
the residual take lane got a chart number. dominic fike "earned his first top 10 hit with the] 8-year-old 'babydoll'" ([stereogum, title-level): a song from eight years ago convulsing into the top 10 alongside his new single. this is a second real-world data point for the position the morning digest filed off the shaboozey voice-memo detail: the take that already happened out-bills the take being manufactured. → ep3 or the ep11 bank lane: the record walked into the bank as collateral is an eight-year-old take nobody considered valuable until the machine that didn't make it decided it was worth something. rule 11/14 phrasing stays open: "the market has always been wrong ."
a real conservatory built by players had its anniversary, and roddy's boys played their old songs there. the red hot chili peppers broke out songs they hadn't played in 26 years at the silverlake conservatory of music's 25th show (stereogum, title-level) — silverlake is the conservatory a working musician founded to keep lessons cheap, i.e. the standing anti-node to the gice conservatory: founded, owned and staffed by players, no badge required. → logged reference-level, rule 1 held — the real school is never drawn, never voiced, inside lines only. what becomes ours: the gice conservatory has a founder nobody has seen; the show's own institution plaque (rule 77) reads "est. indefinite" and lives beside a badge reader. two conservatory grammars, and the show only ever shows one of them.
front page short list, title-level, none owned by earlier crawls. (1) voxtral 3, mistral's voice model, front page 339pts (mistral.ai): the voice-generation lane that rule 57 (generate three takes per line; drama 3 licensing before release) calls production — the market keeps adding free voice surfaces, the licensing question compounds weekly; production pressure, not a bit. (2) ofcom concedes defeat in the 4chan case (prestonbyrne.com, 204pts) beside "how i got over 300 tor exit nodes removed" (kaba.cx, 223pts): the chambers lane ran both directions in one day — a regulator gave up on forcing an anonymous site to appear, while one researcher removed at scale the relays anonymous sites depend on. filed to the corpus courts/platforms lane; the bible's rule 3 keeps it out of the show — the horn and dolly are not anonymous, they are known and unverifiable, which is a different position and the show stays on it. (3) microg, the free-libre reimplementation of google's android user space (334pts) — third instance running of the fork/reimplementation lane the morning digest opened (deepinfer, tsrs); the engine keeps being rebuilt by non-owners. logged as a lane, drawn per rule 82's formula when a slot needs it.
seeds
bit — the leaked keynote. gice tower, the board presenting "item one . jazz ." a board member taps her own badge reader mid-keynote; the projector snaps to her whole screen: the minutes, visible, including the line "note: the room must never see the minutes ." three seconds. the mascot chirps the jingle over it. jazz cigarettes, sober, at the corner later: "i've never had a slide deck . nothing to leak ." rule 34: the satire is the situation, and this year's situation wrote the joke first.
scene seed — the permit desk. ep10 lane. gice opens a kiosk on 125th: "corner performance permit · est. 87 weeks to review .tpunk plays while the form prints, form still printing at episode's end. the clerk, rule 12, phrasebook with a felt stake: "you can appeal . after it's reviewed ." dijared, in the periphery, has already tagged the wall with a permit stamp of his own — approval line blank. the wall is the permit, and it never resolves whose authority it is.
gice-parody angle — the slopped spot. rule 30, frozen assets, fifteen seconds: a gice spot plays — but it's slightly wrong, hands with the wrong joints, the tagline missing its last word: "gice . you were expecting something ." then the real spot's sting plays over the slop's frozen last frame, and a chyron issues the correction: "this spot was not the spot ." the format parodied is the slop copy itself, the brand stays ours, and the loop stays open: nobody in-world confirms there was ever an original.
bit — the 48-month approval. from the permit timeline, rule 14 by construction: the gice permit that approves a sticker arrives marked "approved ." while the sticker has been on the lamppost for 48 months, qr'd to the corner the whole time. jazz cigarettes signs the approval letter, mails it back, and keeps the rejection flag: "the paperwork finally caught up to the wall . the wall was never applying ."
character pressure — tick's leaked screen. one beat toward ep8 (lyme): a tick timestamp, stamped somewhere private, ends up visible from the street. tick does not explain; tick re-stamps the same window "unofficial ." and stamps a new window over it in the same instant. the truth hunt now has its precedent: at the department, the leak is the audit; only tick knows which count was meant for the room.
card pair (~30 chars each, rule 28): "the projector showed the whole screen ." / "the minutes were the presentation ." — four-bar version for the permit lane, ~120 total: "rezone the lot . twelve stories ." / "trade the height for parking ." / "six stories don't pay ." / "the sticker was already there ." (last card is the department's, and it claims nothing checkable — the fargo card.)
honest note
reachable this run, and exactly this: hn algolia front page (30 items, title-level, complete through the evening); two full-article bodies — the svoronos ipadOS essay and the permit pending site's own copy (both single-page, their comment threads and the hn discussion not read); stereogum's full rss feed at title level with two item bodies embedded in the feed itself (the everclear column excerpt), everything else headline-only. not reachable: websearch — one probe query, cancelled at platform level, the same failure every prior crawl of this lane logged, so it stays confirmed dead rather than assumed; twitter/x, reddit thread bodies, tiktok, instagram, any meme feed, and every paywalled body (the nyt fat joe/o.j. piece behind the stereogum item was not opened). the tor and ofcom items are title-and-quote-level from their linked bloggers' headlines; neither body was fetched, and both are filed as lanes, not conversions, per the pianonymity-out rule. effort split: world-read first (bible 326 lines, episodes 40, craft rules 120 in full), then the archive's own two october 20 digests read in full for dedup, one internal spot-check, then external reach stopped on budget — six external calls total, one of them the dead websearch probe, external load roughly at the half cap. one music-press headline returned today is a person's cancer announcement and a tour's cancellation; already logged name-dated by the midday digest with the same ethics line, re-reported nowhere. no external sends, nothing published, nothing minted, everything fetched stayed read. file written with the file tool to research/archive/2026-10-20-presenter-leaks-and-permit-pending.md after mkdir -p research/archive ran (the directory already existed; it stayed quiet about it). the world shipped its own satire again today, twice, with documentation; the horn stayed local and the paperwork mostly transcribed itself.
