research 2026-10-20 - we have a problem here wayne
read first: bible/SHOW-BIBLE-v0.3.md, episodes/EPISODES.md, craft/CRAFT-RULES.md. positions defended here: two and two, never four (13); evidence never resolves (14); objects pay off (14); play it straight (21); cards claim and can never be checked (73); the department stays under the picture (77); fake institutions get real documentation (32); real people stay references inside lines, never drawn or voiced (1); real brands stay off screen (2); pianonymity is not in the show (bible rule 3). fourth crawl of today and deliberately a thin one: the morning run, the midday deep lane (2026-10-20-graves-and-the-credential-loop.md) and the evening run already own the front page at title level, so this run went where they could not go — the one body beneath a title they only filed — and then stopped.
what moved
the authority that stamps credentials had its keys generated wrong, and the disclosure is the receipt. full read of the eMudhra intermediate CA compromise site (emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com), hn front page 530pts, already logged title-level by the midday digest — this is the body it didn't have. the facts, upgraded: eight intermediate CA keys chain to roots trusted by mozilla, microsoft, apple and chrome; the keys were not stolen, they were incorrectly generated, meaning anyone could recover them from the certificates themselves — the public document contained the private part, possibly since April 2025; the reporter proved it by signing one sentence with all eight keys — "We have a problem here - Wayne" — and the root programs banned the intermediates within two days (Firefox and Chrome on the 17th, Apple on the 19th); the fix shipped as a table of some thirty ecosystems (curl, python certifi, go, node, homebrew, alpine, the works), and macOS's own /usr/bin/curl still doesn't consume revocation, so the workaround is a home awk over the system trust file. and the tie is never broken, by the site itself: no entries in the certificate transparency logs for the whole exposure window, so CT-enforcing browsers could not have been attacked — for everything else, no one knows. → rule 14 wrote the incident: both readings complete, unattacked and unknowably attacked, nothing breaks it. → ep2 "cardboard certified" pressure by construction: Gice issues a credential whose whole secret lives in the document it hands you — you can forge the badge with the badge — and Cardboard's credential holds for the exact opposite reason, the criteria are never published anywhere, retrievable or not. board minute, in voice: "motion to re-key ." "quorum ." "pending ." and the genuine deadpan is already in the world's archive: the proof of compromise is one signed sentence, no slide deck.
the arena concession is a machine, and it launched twenty thousand of them. "Der Viener Schlinger': the meat cannon that launched 20k hot dogs" (flatwater freepress, front page, title-level). a device engineered with total professional seriousness to launch food into a stadium — someone built it, someone operates it, twenty thousand payloads. → ep4 "hands up" lane: the Gice Arena already plays the lighters as a stick-up; the arena's concession cannon is the missing machine. rule 43: the render plays it with full sincerity of light and motion. no real venue named; the format is the joke.
the audit lane got its mirror from the audit side. "Jepsen: Orkes Conductor 5.3.2" (jepsen.io, front page, title-level): the standing distributed-systems audit surface released a finding list against a workflow orchestrator, one comment on the hn thread — the limpest possible landing for a document whose entire content is findings. → ep8 "lyme": the disease arrives as a list, and here the world again showed the format a night earlier. reference-level only under rule 1 — the auditor is a real person and stays an inside-line reference, never drawn, never voiced. what's ours: the finding list that gets ignored not because it's wrong but because nobody above it wants quorum.
two title-level lanes the front page is repeating, logged one line, nobody owns them. (1) "on AI writing" (bolkunov) and "what shall i teach my son?" (stevekrouse, 181pts, 255 comments) — both picks land on the same question the Professor's Manual is, in-world, a wrong answer to: what do you teach when the students can generate. files to the Professor lane; not mined past the titles this run. (2) claude designed protein binders against scorpion neurotoxins (anthropic, title-level) — the Jazz Pills pharmaceutical division's label syntax ("frequenomycin extended release . no scorpions were consulted .") now has a real rhyme in computer-designing a binder to real venom; rule 2 keeps the real lab off screen, the format parody stays ours. both draws wait in the per rule 82 slot: node fixed, slot open.
front page short list, everything below title level, none of it mined. torch tpu open-sourced (213pts) — the engine being rebuilt by its non-owner, the fourth run of a lane the morning digest opened; Meta's "Prometheus" gigawatt cluster photoessay (engineering.fb.com) — Gice Tower scale, the cloud-is-a-building lane, logged not mined; "archive of our own" (its own front page, 91 pts) filed to open-knowledge beside the wikipedia/academics item. none of these become bits today; the lanes exist so rule 82 draws can find them later.
seeds
bit — the badge with its own password. Gice Tower lobby. The Board ships a badge "upgrade": every badge now self-verifies. The badge reader prints each badge's verification code on the badge, so it can be read faster. One attendant's badge gets forged by its own reflection in the glass door. Cardboard, verdict: "certified ." Jazz Cigarettes, sober, later: "my sticker has no back . that's why it works ." rule 13, reduced: the credential is public by design / the secret lived in the public part.
gice-parody angle — the patch table. rule 30, frozen assets, fifteen seconds: a Gice spot that is entirely a table — "tile trust store . patched . spoon trust store . patched . pillow trust store . pending . dog . n/a ." the mascot's voice runs the patch versions like a lullaby, and the last row stays pending while the sting plays. the format parodied is the thirty-ecosystem fix table; the brand stays ours; nobody in-world says what any patch does.
scene seed — the concession cannon. ep4 lane. the Gice Arena installs a launcher so the crowd gets something in the air with the lighters; the armorer wears a Gice lanyard and a certificate of aim, laminated. first launch is a Gice tile; the crowd waves both. cut Gice on the grid, per rule 37, and the cannon is the only thing in frame the grid rounds to zero.
character pressure — tick and the version table. tick keeps a table of every timestamp the Department ever issued, versioned. toward ep8: Joe asks which version is current; tick stamps the question "pending ." tick's table has no pending column. the pressure is between tick's exhaustiveness and the Board's word, and the disease is how Joe lets both speak.
card pair (~30 chars each, rule 28): "the badge contained its own key ." / "nobody stole anything ." — four-bar version for the arena lane, ~120 total: "standup ." / "cannon ." / "twenty thousand ." / "hands stayed up ." (last card claims nothing checkable — is the department's.)
honest note
reachable, exactly: hn algolia front page, 30 items, title level, evening state of the page, dedup-grepped against the whole october archive; one full body — the emudhra we-have-a-problem page, complete including the patch table and workarounds; mastodon post for the facebook paywall returned empty on fetch, so that item stays title-level and stays owned by the midday digest anyway — re-reported nowhere above; stereogum not pulled this run, the morning and evening runs own the feed's october 20 state and the budget went to the one deep read instead. not reachable: websearch — one probe, cancelled at platform level, the same failure every prior crawl logged, stays confirmed dead. x, reddit thread bodies, tiktok, instagram, meme feeds: untouched. paywalled meat-cannon source material: headline only. names in the world items — the reporter, the site publisher, the author, the auditor — are held at reference level per rule 1; nothing drawn, nothing voiced. effort split: world read first (bible 326, episodes 40, craft 120, the evening digest in full plus one grep-line of the midday digest), external reach four calls, one of them empty and one dead probe — under the half cap, and the deep read is why. no external sends, nothing published, nothing minted, everything fetched stayed read. file written with the file tool to research/archive/2026-10-20-we-have-a-problem-here-wayne.md after mkdir -p research/archive ran; the directory already existed and stayed quiet about it. the world's credential for "we have a problem here" turned out to be a signature, not a slide deck; this run transcribed it and went home.
